It’s officially summer, and here in Florida, it feels like the heat is here to stay a while. We’ve rounded up some of the best summer tips to stay cool and make sure you aren’t at risk for any heat-related illnesses.
Summer Weather Tips
Tip #1: Drink Plenty of Water/Liquids
Avoid beverages with caffeine or alcohol which will cause your body to lose water. Water is best but fruit/vegetable juices work well, too. Keep rehydrating throughout the day!
Tip #2: Sunscreen is Your Friend
Now that you are hydrated, make sure to use a sunscreen with SPF of 15+. Apply the sunscreen generously to any skin that is exposed.
Tip #3: Stay Out of Direct Sunlight
Air conditioning is your friend in the summer, but when you do go outside, make sure you are prepared. Wear clothing that is comfortable and cool (cotton is often found to be cooler than synthetic fibers) and consider wearing a hat. Plan to go outside in the mornings or evenings when it is usually cooler outside and avoid going outside in the middle of the day when it’s hotter.
Tip #4: Cool Down After Being Outside
Once you are inside, take a few minutes to help your body cool down. If you don’t have time or energy to take a cool shower/bath, you can press cool washcloths on your wrists, ankles, and neck to help cool down after being in the heat.
Tip #5: Listen To Your Body
It is important to be able to discern when and if the heat is affecting your body. If you feel any symptoms coming on, contact your doctor. Here are a few signs of common heat-related illnesses to help guide you:
Dehydration
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Muscle cramps
Heat Stroke

- Nausea/vomiting
